Ah, visions
of the Easter Bunny, Mothers Day Brunch and the arrival of our long
awaited Great Channel docks, means that spring and summer is in
the air. You wouldn't have known it this past April 5th when 4 flatbed
tractor-trailers pulled into the yacht club parking lot with docks
manufactured by Sullivan Floatation Systems.
The thermometer
read 28 degrees with winds approaching 50 miles per hour. The 11,000-pound
wave attenuators were lifted from the trailers and tenaciously placed
into the basin. The whitecaps forced the crew to assemble the docks
within the shelter of the basin and on Wednesday, the dock system
was towed to the channel side and anchored with temporary wooden
pile. The finger piers were then lifted from the parking lot and
attached to the docks in the channel.
This past week
has seen much progress in the channel side docks as the project
nears its completion date. The docks have been put in place according
to our permit and have been secured by 45-foot long continuous (no
seams) steel piles, which have been epoxy painted black and topped
with black pile caps. A platform has been constructed from the bulkhead
and the aluminum ramp attached.
The final piece
of the puzzle is the running of utilities to the docks. There will
be power and plumbing delivered through eight "Hatteras" power pedestals.
These will be located throughout the dock facility and will deliver
30 amp electric plug-in service, hose bibs and illumination during
the evening hours. These pedestals are scheduled to arrive by Memorial
Day, with pre-wiring occurring in preparation before then. The dock
committee is in the process of putting together dock rules and policies
for the season.
This new facility
adds 18 new slips, and plenty of (200+ feet) transient docking
to tie up and enjoy dinner, drinks and fun at the club,
which adds a whole new dimension to the club and services it provides.
There is a short waiting list for docks, so if you are interested
in putting your name in, please let me know. There is one slip available,
which was not marketed, due to location and water depth. It measures
9 feet wide on a 20-foot finger pier next to the bulkhead and may
be ideal for a wave runner or jet ski dock.
Our
Great Channel docks and basin docks will be ready for the season
this week. Perfect timing for a fabulous 75th season with a new
docking facility we can all be proud of. Motor or sail to the club
for sunset cocktails or dinner or simply take an evening stroll
on the docks, they are yours to use.
