 PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Youth Activities Program (YAP) at the Yacht Club of Stone Harbor provides six weeks of instruction and fun for the children and grandchildren of members.

Children as young as four years of age develop lasting friendships and learn a healthy respect for the water.

Classes include sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, arts & crafts, swimming and nature lessons. Participants may choose an all-day camp program or select a few favorites.

Sailing instruction is given in Optimists, Sunfish, Lasers and Club 420s. Junior Sailing races take place each Wednesday, and provide a safe and fun environment for sailors to develop their racing skills. Youth sailors do not need to be enrolled in YAP to participate in the races.

Our sailing curriculum is based on the U.S. Sailing standards and all instructors have achieved at least U.S. Sailing Level I certification. All instructors are certified in CPR.

Tuesday evenings are reserved for Flea Fleet, a youth social program, providing another means of fostering friendships.

 2006 Session Dates

 CLASSES OFFERED

Classes meet on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesdays, youth sailing races are held.

Little YAP – Children ages 4 & 5 may participate in this morning only program. Activities help acquaint the children with YAP and develop safety skills in and around the water. Lunch is included.

Day Camp – Children ages 6 and up may enroll in the all-day camp program which includes sailing, kayaking, arts & crafts, swimming, windsurfing (ages 8+), and nature lessons (ages 6 & 7).

Sailing Classes – For those not participating in the day camp, sailing instruction is available in beginning, intermediate and advanced levels for Optimist and Sunfish, and for advanced sailors in Laser and Club 420. Classes meet for 2-3 hours per day except on Wednesdays when participation in races is expected.

Note : Sailing students must have their own boat or, for beginners, arrange to use one of the Club’s Optimists when registering. The boat use fee is waived for first time sailors for one session.

Non-sailing Activities – Those not participating in day camp may choose any of the following classes which meet twice a week: kayaking, windsurfing, swimming, arts & crafts.

 IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Sailing classes are offered in the full three week sessions only. Private lessons can be arranged if less than four weeks is desired.

All sailors are required to pass a swimming test on the first day of the session.

All YAP participants are expected to bring a towel, life jacket with whistle attached, sunscreen and appropriate clothing for the day. Classes are held indoors in inclement weather. A water bottle is also recommended. Please clearly label all belongings with permanent marker.

Lunch is served each day in the Grille Room. Children may purchase lunch or bring their own.

Storage lockers on the Grille Room deck are available for $100 per season on a first come first served basis.

YAP fees may be paid by check, credit card or put on your YCSH account; however, all fees must be paid before the start of the session, including any on your account. There are no refunds once the session has begun.

Placement in sailing classes is at the discretion of the Waterfront Director and the Sailing Instructors and is based on age, skill level and experience.

  REGISTRATION

Members will receive YAP registration packets in February. All completed forms must be returned by the specified deadline to ensure your child’s place in the program.

A child will be placed on a waiting list if their registration form is received after the deadline. We will make every effort to accommodate all children, but cannot guarantee enrollment after the registration deadline.

For grandparents wishing to enroll grandchildren, please note:

The Board of Directors has adopted a firm policy that in order for children to participate in the Youth Activities or Junior Sailing programs, their parents must be club members (or on the waiting list for membership).

This requirement may be waived if:

1) The children reside with and are under the supervision of their grandparents (who are members) during the time the children are enrolled; and

2) The parents are not in or around the Stone Harbor area.

If you are a grandparent member wishing to enroll your grandchildren in the Youth Activities or Junior Sailing programs, please submit a written request to the Commodore for consideration .

 SAILING EQUIPMENT

The Yacht Club owns a limited number of Optimists, Lasers and Club 420s for use by sailing students. They are available on a first come first served basis, and a boat use fee is charged. (This fee is waived for first time sailors for one session.)

Sunfish sailors and Advanced Optimist sailors are required to have their own boats. All boats must be equipped with 30’ of towline, attached to the bow.

Boats and/or trailers may be stored in the boatyard for a seasonal fee. See the Waterfront Director to secure a rack or trailer space.

YCSH has several trailers available for use by members wishing to travel to outside regattas. See the Waterfront Director.
